Washing Machine Repair Project

We purchased this Whirlpool compact HD washer while we were in Phoenix, AZ for the winter in 2008 and it has been great. However the last two years occasionally it would set a trouble code A10 which means it does not drain the water from the tub in order to enter the spin cycle. I tried everything I could find on the internet…

The drain pump clean out, the drain tube and nothing seemed to work. Two weeks ago while we were at Lake Seminote it set the A10 code again and never drained at all this time. I used a small wet dry vac to drain the washer and when we returned to the Home Base I took the washer out, removed every panel I could remove and disassembled the entire drain system from the drain hose, pump, cleanup, and finally when I removed the large hose from the tub to the drain pump a ping pong ball fell out! Upon further investigation I discovered there is a device in that tube called the ECO valve that is designed to prevent a sewage backup in the house plumbing from entering the tub.

Since that can’t happen in an RV that has separate tanks for grey and black water I simply removed it and re-assembled the washer and now it works like new. I guess our washer bouncing down the highway at 60 MPH the ECO valve dislodged itself and completely blocked the tub drain to the pump.
